Medicare telemedicine services are delivered to beneficiaries via telephone or video conferencing. Eligible healthcare professionals typically provide these telehealth services. Medicare expanded coverage of telehealth during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). However, these flexibilities are only temporary. They will expire 151 days after the public health emergency ends.
Telemedicine is a remote clinical service that requires real-time communication through an interactive audio-video connection. Doctors must meet Medicare's requirements for telehealth services, including location in a patient's home or an allowable facility and using live videoconferencing technology. During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, CMS temporarily extended coverage for a subset of telehealth services through December 31, 2023 (or through the end of the year when the public health emergency ends, whichever is later). These services include physical and occupational therapy, evaluation and management, behavioral health, and patient education telehealth services. CMS also added certain communication technology-based services to the Medicare Telehealth Services List on a Category 3 basis. These codes may have a clinical benefit when furnished via telehealth but don't have sufficient evidence to justify permanent coverage. These include some audiology and speech-language pathology services. Medicare covers a wide range of health services. These include telehealth visits and other virtual healthcare services. Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), as well as some Medicare Advantage, plans, cover telehealth services. These telehealth benefits are available from various providers, both in-person and online. Doctors who provide telemedicine have to use live, real-time audio and video connections for the service to be covered by Medicare. The originating location of the telemedicine service must be in a patient’s home or another allowable facility. During COVID-19, Medicare expanded its coverage to cover a wider range of telehealth services. This broad but time-limited expansion allowed people to access telehealth in any geographic region, whether at home or in healthcare settings and from various healthcare professionals. In addition to the Medicare coverage benefits available for beneficiaries and healthcare providers, Medicare also has specific regulatory requirements regarding telemedicine. These guidelines are important to ensure eligibility, service delivery and proper reimbursement for telemedicine services. Medicare has a limited number of covered telehealth services, but they must be delivered via interactive audio-video telecommunications technology. This technology allows real-time communication between the originating site practitioner and the beneficiary at a medical facility. As part of the COVID-19 pandemic, a broad but time-limited expansion of telehealth coverage is now available to Medicare beneficiaries. While many of these telehealth benefits were not universally embraced, the broader scope and flexibility during the COVID-19 public health emergency allowed various telehealth modalities and providers to be included in the Medicare telehealth coverage list. Medicare Telemedicine Services are a convenient and affordable way to receive medical care from a health professional in another location. It's especially beneficial if you're in a rural or underserved area or have a condition requiring frequent follow-ups and appointments with different doctors or specialists. During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, Medicare expanded telehealth coverage so more people could benefit from a virtual visit to their healthcare provider. This expanded coverage can help reduce the need for in-person visits while lowering exposure to the COVID-19 virus in vulnerable people, including children and adults. Medicare telehealth coverage is typically the same as it would be for in-person visits, and costs can be similar to standard copayments. However, some providers will reduce or waive cost-sharing for telehealth visits as part of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency.
